Three posts re-posted

If you receive posts by email, rather than looking on the website, you may have missed some. This is because very occasionally two posts go out by email on the same day, and when this happens there appears (for abstruse technical reasons) a large white space between them, so that the post below that space can easily be missed. So, to find out whether people actually see a second post, I've gathered together here three of the less time-sensitive second posts, in the hope that you would let us know whether you've seen them before, at imogenerussell1@gmail.com  If you are viewing this message on the website, this problem does not appear.

The first post is immediately here. Scroll down past the white space for the others - unless you are looking at the notices on the website, where there is no white space between posts.

This one went out three days ago on April 22nd:
Better late than never

Neil Sinclair writes:

After more than a year, repairs to the boundary wall of the John Penn and Widow Smith alms houses on Greenwich South Street have been completed.
The builders have done a splendid job, although (if we're being really picky) it's a pity they couldn't have salvaged more of the original red bricks and white coping stones.

Let's hope the repairs last as long as the original wall, which dates back to the late 19th century when the now Grade II listed alms houses were built.

Café Rouge Greenwich offers 20% ATA-card discount

Chris Ward wrote last August:

As we head into August what better way to enjoy the summer than French food accompanied by an extensive array of French wines. The ATA announces that the latest addition to our partners offering a discount to ATA card holders is the Café Rouge at 30 Stockwell St, Greenwich, London SE10 9JN.
The menu at Café Rouge covers a range of French classics, from croquet monsieur, croquet saumo, fromage and merguez baguettes to more substantial meals such as steak frites, (their signature dish), 32oz cote de boeuf, bouillabaisse, poulet breton and bœuf bourguignon. Likewise the wines are all French, many from lesser-known regional producers. They also have a wide range of beers and cocktails.
Café Rouge is offering 20% off all food from the a-la-carte menu, (offer excludes Prix Fixe menu and drink,) to ATA residents who present the card when they order. Don't be fooled by hi-viz jackets

Imogene wrote last July:

If three blokes come to your door in hi-viz jackets, like they did to us the other day, saying they’re doing a survey for moneysupermarket.com, it’s not the moment for bonhomie and inclusiveness and for asking them in for a cup of tea and a squint at your energy bills.

When a fourth character materialised at the back in a suit and tie, I did ask if it was usual for researchers to travel in packs of four, but the answer seemed reasonable - two were trainees and one was the area manager. Luckily my daughter was there, with better fraud-antennae than I have - not so given to mindless optimism. She saw them off, and was proved right by a call to moneysupermarket.com, who said they never send people door to door.

The police came round and opined that the hi-viz mob were probably interested in physically snaffling a few valuables after they’d distracted you. Apart from expected advice about examining ID and not letting people in, the police suggested taking a picture of them. I love it: ‘Could you move together a bit more. Your manager needs to be in it too - we want to see everybody. No, look up. Look this way. Smile!’

Royal Hill Community Garden update

According to posters on Royal Hill and Circus Street the Greenwich Council's Planning Board has now rejected its own proposal to dig up the Community Garden and construct four properties on the land. There will no doubt be an appeal from the developer but, for now at least, the local community has won.

Deptford ship project at tall ships festival

On Easter Saturday and Sunday, the Lenox Project will have a stall on the riverfront. If you want to know about this project to build and keep a fully-working C17th replica warship in Deptford, or if you want to see their restored Saker cannon, their stall will be just upstream of Greenwich town centre - right next to the (fairly new) Sail Loft pub at

Lenox people say that the Parade of Sail of departing ships will set out from Deptford Creek on Easter Sunday afternoon, close to their stall.

The stall's position at Easter
The Lenox project's main news this year is that in January they became a registered charity, rather than a community interest company. This has some financial advantages, which they certainly need if they're going to raise the something like £27 million it will take to build the ship.

The plan is for a permanent shipbuilding museum at Convoys Wharf in Deprford, the site of Henry VIII's and later Charles II's, dockyard, where the original Lenox was built in 1677.

Tall Ships in Greenwich over Easter

Photo: Neil Sinclair
Thirty tall sailing ships will be in Greenwich and Woolwich by Thursday 13th April, leaving on 16th, Easter Sunday afternoon. The Parade of Sail, as they head out to sea, is billed for 5pm.

It's a four-day festival, with entertainment on shore - street theatre, giant octopus, bicycle ballet, music etc. See Meridian magazine and the Greenwich Council website, which also has info on buying tickets to go on some larger ships, moored or moving.

The race goes to Quebec via Portugal, Bermuda and Boston - and then back to Le Havre by late August.

High tide on Sunday 5.15pm.

Weather forecast good.
