ATA carols for charity and fun, hosanna in excelsis, Christmas has begun

Quite a crowd went out singing in the streets in traditional fashion on Monday night just gone, with many assiduous children knocking on doors collecting for Shelter.

Hugo and Marion roasted chestnuts on Stuart's brazier

Chestnuts beforehand were generously roasted by Hugo and Marion Sands on Stuart Mulholland's brazier; with mulled wine and mince pies given to us free by the kindness of publicans, Pepi and Andy.

Mick (far right foreground) and Janet
(2nd from right in background) led the way
Mick Delap and Janet Stott ably led the singing tour round the streets. We visited the Golden Chippy for the first time this year, and Chris Kanizi came out dispensing wine all round.

Left to right: Oci sings, Alexis plays the melodion, Janet sings
When Alexis and Oci Bennett arrived with their melodion and recorder respectively, and with their notable musical ability, happiness was complete.

Singing from the same hymn sheet:
Rob and Zoe Willett and daughters
Back at the Ash we ate chef Latina's tasty cottage pies, vegetarian and carnivore, provided at cost price by the generosity, again, of Pepi and Andy.

Barbara, quiz-maker and MC
Then we pitted our wits over Barbara Reid's skilfully-pitched Christmas quiz. It was won by a group of young women from Hyde Vale!! We don't resent it because they are a great asset to our carol singing every year.

A good time was had by all. And £358 was raised for Shelter.

Where there's Ash there's brass

Encore! Encore!

Punters in the Ash on Thursday night had the rare treat of joining in with carols and Christmas songs played by Paul Barrett of Ashburnham Grove, affectionately known as Trombone Paul, and four friends, all professional musicians (I'm sorry, I've lost one behind his instrument).
Publican Andy asked Paul and his friends to play. Thanks to all of them. It's not often that sort of thing happens. We were in luck. Bring on more.

Golden Chippy sign

Mick Delap, one-time ATA chair and planning rep, says:

'Our chip shop needs support.

'Chris Kanizi of the Golden Chippy has applied for retrospective planning approval for his sign, as pictured.

'Chris has been a highly valued contributor to the Triangle over the years. I agree with him that his sign does what all Conservation Area applications must do - it preserves and enhances the character of the Conservation Area, because:
· it has historical precedence - see the photo below of a 1940 sign of the same size on the same site
·  it is very much in character with the established signs in the Greenwich High Road part of the Conservation Area
· it is very modestly lit, less bright than nearly all these nearby signs (with LEDs providing 1200 lumens per square metre)
·  its quirky and distinctive design is in tune with the identity Chris has successfully created for the Golden Chippy, as an integral part of today's Triangle. All the Triangle residents I have consulted agree with this claim.

'You may have already commented to the Council on this case some time ago, but recently Councillor Mehboob Khan has asked Chris to make his case to all three West Ward councillors once more, and suggests that, if Triangle residents want it to succeed, their renewed support is vital.'

If you'd like to comment on Chris's application - one way or another, for or against - you can do so on the Royal Borough of Greenwich Planning Search site: https://planning.royalgreenwich.gov.uk/online-applications/
or email the case officer, Charlotte Norris, at planningapps@royalgreenwich.gov.uk
or write to her at the Planning Department, 5th Floor, Woolwich Centre, 35 Wellington Street, SE18 6HQ.

The application reference number to quote is 17/3320/A.

The Council will accept comments until the matter is discussed and resolved, but as that may happen very soon and as the Council's preferred closing date for comments was last Tuesday 5th December, we are advised that the earlier comments arrive, the more likely they are to be taken into consideration.

'This is a great fun family spectacle raising money this year for YouCan - Youth Cancer Support.'

RACE DAY! Sunday 10th December 2017

11:30am-1pm
The Pre-race Ceremony
Devonport House, King William Walk, SE10 9JW
FREE entry
Hosted by comedians Nick Wilty and Lewis Schaffer
Featuring Strictly Neigh Dancing – Madonna Special
Live music from the London Rock Choir, Sire Equestrian John and MareDonna

1pm
The Race
Starting line: Devonport House, King William Walk
Six pub pit stops
Finish line: The Prince of Greenwich, Royal Hill
The streets of central Greenwich will be transformed into a course for glammed-up comical looking pop/rock star-lookalike nags. These panto horses race from Devonport House with many pub pit stops along the quarter mile route, encountering various obstacles to overcome to gain points per pit stop. The 2017 route has some bizarre surprises in store for those hapless horses, before they stagger to the finishing line an hour later in Royal Hill, west Greenwich, where their team points will be totted up by our strict and highly stern bowler-hatted adjudicator, Helen ‘Robocop’ Robinson. The five horses with the most points will then face their final race challenge, the space hopper finale.

The Space Hopper Finale
Each nag will have two space hoppers - one each for the front and back ends of their horse. Each half-horse  must sit, bounce and race to the finish line, trying to jump over the many steeple jumps and surprise obstacles. First home will be crowned the official 2017 winner, and prizes will go to 2nd and 3rd place runners-up.

The After-race Xmas Party
The Prince of Greenwich, Royal Hill
