Ewan Hooper

Image
Ewan Hooper, a  much loved and long-standing resident of the Ashburnham Triangle and a stalwart in the early days of the Ashburnham Triangle  Association, died in April.   Ewan was a well known actor producer and director with parts in many films, including the priest in Dracula has Risen from the Grave , and in plays on stage and radio. He was best known in the Triangle as the moving spirit behind the founding of the Ashburnham Triangle Association in 1975/6, and as a regular attendee of St Marks church. Earlier, he had been the force behind the redevelopment of Greenwich Theatre, which reopened in 1969.  He was a close friend to Max Wall, who regularly played at Greenwich, and became chairman of the Max Wall Society.  As further evidence of his commitment to local theatre, in 1971 he was involved in setting up the Greenwich Young People's Theatre in Burrage Road. Here he came across the disused Woolwich Tramshed, and suggested to Greenwich Council it be develo...

Your views on cervical screening in Greenwich Cervical screening (smear test) is an important test which checks the health of your cervix (the opening to your womb from your vagina). Screening can help prevent cancer and saves lives.  All women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64 are invited to be screened.  We would like to hear what women and people with a cervix in the borough of Greenwich aged 25 to 64 feel and think about cervical screening to enable us to improve the process and make it easier for people.  💬 Take our short survey - you could win £50 in Love 2 Shop vouchers. Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday Bin Collections

There are revised collection dates for our waste and recycling bins for the Platinum Jubilee bank holiday.   The Platinum Jubilee brings with it two extra bank holidays on the 2 and 3 June.  All collections due to take place between Monday 30 May – Friday 3 June will take place two days earlier than normal , so the Triangle's collections will be on Saturday 28 May rather than the following Monday. Please make sure you put your bins out ready for our crews by 6am on the day of collection.  As there will be fewer crews black and green top bins will be prioritised and blue top bins may be left until the following week.   Normal collections will resume Monday 6 June.

Thames Tideway Update

We have received an update on the Thames Tideway’s latest Community Liaison Working Group: This week marked the beginning of the end for Thames Tideway’s Greenwich Connection Tunnel – and for the Tunnel Boring Machine Annie.  Annie started from Greenwich Pumping Station - GREPS - on Norman Road last winter, and has just arrived at the destination for the Greenwich Connection Tunnel: Chambers Wharf, just downstream from Tower Bridge.  There is as of this week a new tunnel between Greenwich and Tower Bridge.  How often can you say that!  So the last barge load of chalky tunnel soil is now being shipped out of Deptford Creek ,  and TTT’s GREPS contractor, AVB, will now start dismantling the Phoenix Wharf machinery used to ship out the tunnel spoil.  AVB are very pleased with themselves, both for making the tunnel breakthrough,  and for managing to get much more spoil out by barge,  not lorry, during the tunnelling  (41%,  not the orig...

West Greenwich Hills & Vales traffic scheme to end

According to the 853 local news website: Greenwich Council is to scrap its low-traffic neighbourhood in streets west of Greenwich Park – only a year after a senior councillor promised that the scheme would “just be the start” of measures to cut traffic in the borough’s back streets. The decision, due to be signed off by Labour transport cabinet member Sarah Merrill this week, ends an 18-month scheme where through traffic was stopped from passing down Crooms Hill, Royal Hill, Point Hill and Maidenstone Hill following complaints from residents about rat-running and antisocial behaviour from drivers trying to avoid queues on the A2.  More details on the 853 website, here.

New street lights

Residents in the Triangle wondering why they have new, brighter streetlights may find this information from the Council interesting:  The Council has secured a £11.5 million loan from The Mayor of London’s Energy Efficiency Fund (MEEF) to replace all its 20,000 traditional street lights with modern LED equivalents – saving £1million a year in energy and maintenance costs. The new light-emitting diode lanterns, known as LEDs, will ensure that the borough’s streets are lit to the current modern standards, but they are also highly efficient and environmentally friendly as they concentrate light on where it is needed with less light pollution. Light will be more evenly distributed down the road - making streets feel safer. More details on the Council's website .  Lights have already been replaced on Egerton Drive and Langdale Road this week

Resident parking permits go online

From 24 May anyone renewing an existing permit or applying for a new permit to park in a controlled parking zone (CPZ) in the Royal Borough of Greenwich will be able to do so conveniently online at a time that suits them. Waiting for paper permits will be a thing of the past as the new self-service system will instantly issue a virtual permit – which can’t be lost or stolen.   All applicants will need to do is create an account the first time that they use the service, upload their documents (dependent on the type of permit they’re applying for) and have a credit or debit card ready for payment.  Existing paper permits can still be used until they expire and then the owner will need to apply for a virtual permit. Paper permits can still be transferred to a new vehicle, replaced if lost, stolen or damaged and refunded if no longer needed. Carers’ permits will still be paper based but users will need to apply online.  From 10 May 2021 charges for parking permits, and s...

Thames Tideway Tunnel update

Tideway are starting up Annie, the Tunnel Boring Machine, next week.  This is a big moment for all the Thames Tideway Tunnel team, but it will mean more lorry traffic to take the muck away – an extra 30 lorries a day to start with.  Related lorry traffic will gradually grow next year,  until it reaches a peak of 80 lorries over summer 2021 – and on into Spring 2022,  which is when they will complete the Greenwich Connection Tunnel. More details on this work can be found here

Royal Park consultation open

Consultation for the individual Movement Strategy trial projects is now open. To provide feedback on any of the five trial projects, please fill out the Royal Parks' survey . This formal consultation will gather feedback from park visitors, residents and stakeholders. Through the six-month project period, Royal Parks are also collating park stakeholder feedback, and undertaking an evaluation of the external implications of the trials in partnership with relevant transport authorities (eg. TfL and local boroughs). At the end of the trial in February 2021 Royal Parks will determine if they should extend, alter, make permanent or revoke the trial. The Royal Parks' Movement Strategy sets a coherent framework to help shape and inform the policies relating to how park visitors can access, experience and move within the parks. To give your thoughts please complete the survey by 10 January 2021 or email movement.strategy@royalparks.org.uk .
