Next local history group talk: 17 September, 7:30pm

I hope you’ve all had a good summer. September has arrived and it’s time for another local history talk.
It will be on Thursday 17 September at 7.30pm in the lovely West Greenwich Library.
Some of you may have attended Vaughan Ginn’s previous talk about the journalist Gareth Jones, one of the first journalists to report on the 1932-33 Great Famine in Soviet Ukraine. This talk follows on from that to tell the story of John Hughes, a semi-literate Welshman, who set up the highly successful steel mining town Husovska (Hughesovka) named after him in Ukraine. It tells the story of his humble beginnings, his move to the Greenwich area, the connections he made, what happened to Husovska post revolution and the fascinating Kruschev connection.

Our speaker is Vaughan Ginn who lives on Greenwich South Street.
Thanks to all of you who came to Mick Delap’s fascinating talk in May on the why and how of remembering local figures. I will be sending out the notes from that talk in a separate post.
