Lewisham College Deptford campus redevelopment: Thank you and next steps!

Thank you to the 50+ people who turned out for the 7 May public discussion at the Ashburnham Arms. As discussed, everyone is strongly encouraged to submit their comments to the planning application - and to submit comments via both the Greenwich and Lewisham Council planning sites.

To briefly summarise the major themes discussed this evening, expressed concerns include:

  • environmental impact to Deptford Creek and surrounding area of construction zone
  • confirmation of continued creekside walkable access
  • general appreciation that the site should be redeveloped to provide new housing stock but that low rise/low density property sympathetic to the area, and in consideration of overall visual impact, is what is needed
  • the impact on surrounding buildings and their residents
  • the need to consider impact on nearby listed buildings
  • the question of public benefit from submitted plans in respect of retail units and other purported benefits to justify the size/scale of the development
  • impact of the development on noise, pollution, public services (e.g., schools, transport, medical services)
  • only 11% of the 900 residences would be allocated to affordable housing, despite Greenwich's own stated target of 35%
  • enforcement of strict building/planning conditions, when agreed by developers, and who polices what is agreed vs what is built
  • design sensibility from submitted renderings
  • ineffective public consultation processes leaving many impacted unaware of the plans
As a reminder, consultations close on Friday 9 May - please submit your comments as soon as possible.
