Ashburnham Triangle Association

Sounds obvious, but please make sure you fully lock your car when you leave your vehicle. Over the past two days, two cars in the Triangle have had possessions stolen as the vehicles were not locked. We know thieves are operating in this area as two different individuals have been captured on camera trying car door handles in the early hours of the morning. They got lucky on several occasions this week and gained entry to cars in Ashburnham Place and Ashburnham Grove. REMEMBER Don't just rely on your key fob to lock your vehicle. Before you walk away, double check your car door and boot is fully locked.  Don't attract thieves by NEVER leaving anything on show in the car, especially a bag or even a coat on the passenger or back seat. Police have advised to leave your glove compartment open to show would be thieves there is nothing to steal. There’s no better way to enjoy the Six Nations than watching it on the Ashburnham Arms’ massive screen this weekend. It all kicks off on Saturday with Wales v Italy at 2.15 then Ireland v Scotland at 4.45. On Sunday France face England at 3pm.

Did you know that on Thursdays and Fridays (and occasionally on Saturdays subject to availability)  group visits can be arranged to local wonder Severngdroog Castle? (Details of Severndroog Castle can be found here .) If you are please email groups@severndroogcastle.org.uk  and they will be in touch with booking details. They are already taking bookings throughout 2020, so if you are interested best email them ASAP.

The emergency services now have a text service.  You will need to register in advance for this by following these steps: Text REGISTER to 999 You will receive a text message back saying you are now registered.  When needing an emergency service such as police, just simply text: Police  and then add your message for example:  "a fight is happening between a group of men in Cutty Sark Gardens". You use the same ethos for FIRE , AMBULANCE and COASTGUARD . This is a great service. Don't wait for an emergency and register your phone today. A reminder that you are invited to our AGM on the 23rd January 2020 at 7.30pm at West Greenwich Community Centre ( 141 Greenwich High Rd ). We’ll take you through the highlights of the year, our financial position and plans for the year ahead. This AGM will be the last for myself as Chair, Robin as deputy Chair and Annabel as Treasurer. We will step down from our positions making way for new blood. The ATA can only continue with the with the help and time of our fantastic volunteer base so please contact me at ata.chairperson@gmail.com if you would like to put yourself forward as Chair, Deputy Chair or Treasurer.  The ATA will continue its philosophy of asking a lot of people to give a fraction of their time. Janet and Robin Stott thank everyone involved with the Carol Singing on 23rd December. We found it to be a most enjoyable event. As well as thanking all the lusty singers and the young money collectors, whose rattling of the cans contributed to the £340 which the event raised for Shelter, our particular thanks go to Pepina and all at the Ashburnham Arms for their generous support of the event, to Barbara Reid for running the quiz, and to Dai Williams for roasting the chestnuts. We will post on the website a copy of the letter of appreciation which we will assuredly receive from Shelter.

It’s a story of 19th Century industrial glory, 20th Century decline - and new promise for the 21st Century Creek. On Friday ATA resident Mick Delap will be giving an illustrated talk about the Creek’s story, ending with a discussion of the Creek’s future. Mick will be speaking in West Greenwich Library, Greenwich High Road on Friday 10th January, 7.30 - 9.00pm. Admission is free and all ATA and Creek residents are welcome. More information here .

Next meeting will be on Monday 10 February at the Ashburnham Arms (back room) 7.30 - 9.00pm It will feature a short talk by Neil Sinclair who is going to kick off Triangle Lives with the journalist, author, playwright and film scriptwriter Edgar Wallace. Wallace was born illegitimately into poverty in Ashburnham Grove in 1875. Despite leaving school at 12, he rose to great acclaim and fortune as a novelist and scriptwriter. Wallace's eventful and colourful life ended far from its beginning in a terraced house in Greenwich. He died in 1932 in Beverley Hills, California while working on the script of Hollywood blockbuster King Kong .

The Plough Monday Morris Dancing tour is on Monday 13th January. They will be at the Ashburnham Arms, Ashburnham Grove: Meet at 19.30 to dance at 20.00, then they move on for a 20.45 dance at Richard I, Royal Hill, and finally 21.30 dance at the Morden Arms, Brand Street.
