Calling all area history buffs... 23 January, 7pm

Shared on behalf of Barbara Reid, the ATA's History contact...

Happy New Year to you all! And I hope our next talk will bring some light to the long, dark evenings. As you know we had to cancel this talk in November but we have a new date, it’s Thursday 23 January 7.00pm at our lovely West Greenwich Library.

Our speaker is David Whittaker. The title of David's talk is: Lost pubs of Greenwich: Maidenstone Hill and Blackheath Hill. The talk will be looking at the 13 pubs, from coaching inns to beer houses, in this small locality of Greenwich, that have opened and closed over the years. We'll be investigating what these places were like, who used them, why they might (or might not) be missed, and why they ended up disappearing, with some context covering licensing laws, local drinking habits and the temperance movement.

PLEASE NOTE this is an earlier start time of 7.00pm. David’s talk will last 45 to 50 minutes and he will take questions at the end. We will finish around 8.15, David has kindly agreed to be at the Ashburnham Arms after the talk if anyone would like to chat further.

We look forward to seeing you on the night!
