Local success story: A South East London mental health charity celebrates key milestone this Mental Health Week
12 May 2025
Much-loved local mental health charity, The Deborah Ubee Trust (DUT), is celebrating Mental Health Awareness Week by announcing a major new appointment and inviting community members to get involved in its work supporting mental health and emotional wellbeing across Greenwich, Lewisham and Bexley.
Thanks to a secured five-years of funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, DUT has appointed a new Fundraising Lead, marking a pivotal moment in the charity’s story. The post represents a new phase of growth for this grassroots organisation, helping ensure its services are supported and able to reach those in need.
“We are incredibly grateful to The National Lottery”, said Denise Hubble, Director and co-founder of DUT. “This appointment is a crucial step towards realising our original vision. It allows us to target support where it’s most needed, extend our reach, and serve even more community members – especially those who are too often excluded from mental health support.”
Deborah’s legacy: a vital community mental health hub
DUT was established in 2013 in memory of Deborah Ubee, who lost her life after experiencing mental health issues and struggling to access mental health support, due to a critical lack of affordable counselling in the area. Today, her memory lives on at DUT’s centre in Greenwich, which provides purpose-built counselling rooms, a play-therapy space, a sensory room, and a 16-person training and group room.
DUT offers low-cost and free counselling trauma-informed services for local adults and children and young people, providing nearly 5,800 sessions a year to some of South East London’s most underserved and in-need individuals. DUT provides services, including:
– Counselling and group sessions for children, young people and adults
- – School-based services and family support
- – Dance and movement therapy
- – Workshops and courses
- – A range of volunteering opportunities
